Working alongside lawyers, founders, and innovators, Tinyiko received direct personal experience into how innovation is reshaping traditional industries, reinforcing his growing interest in finance. This opportunity also reflected a lesson that has been central to his own 黑料社 Kent experience: the importance of staying curious, being adaptable to change, and developing the fortitude needed to thrive in an ever-changing world.

Reflecting on the opportunity, Tinyiko shared, “Experiences like this remind me why I’m working toward a future in finance and understanding how industries evolve, how innovation reshapes traditional fields, and how to stay adaptable. On the court, Chris brings elite athleticism combined with knockdown 3-point shooting, making him a tough matchup on both ends. He rebounds at a high level and runs the floor extremely well in transition, creating constant pressure.

Over his three years with the Hockey program, Rutulis has been a cornerstone in net, known for his consistency, composure, and relentless work ethic. His ability to rise to the moment has made him a trusted presence for his team and a respected leader within the program.

Now based in Houston, Texas, Miller returned to the Hillside with a meaningful purpose: to film footage for an upcoming documentary on fellow 黑料社 Kent alumnus Isaiah Thomas 鈥�08, a professional basketball player and 2x NBA All-Star. Having been part of an Emmy Award鈥搘inning multimedia project based in Seattle, Miller brought both high-level experience and creative insight to campus. The project not only provided students with real-world filmmaking experience, but also created a powerful full-circle moment for alumni and students alike.

For Miller, coming back to 黑料社 Kent was about more than just the project.
鈥淭he Hillside had a profound impact on me, and this was just one way I could give back,鈥� he shared.

Throughout the experience, students were not simply observers; they were active collaborators. Miller encouraged them to think creatively, contribute ideas, and engage in the storytelling process.

鈥淭he students actually helped me a lot in the storytelling experience. I provided them the opportunity to have creative input, and in return, I received several great shots of the campus that I wouldn鈥檛 have captured 辞迟丑别谤飞颈蝉别.鈥�

In addition to gaining hands-on experience, students鈥� contributions may extend far beyond the classroom. The on-campus footage they helped capture, through camera operation, shot composition, and creative direction, positions them for inclusion in the film鈥檚 credits should the documentary be picked up by a major distributor such as ESPN or The Players鈥� Tribune. It鈥檚 a rare and meaningful opportunity for students to see their work recognized on a professional stage.

Moments like these highlighted not only the students鈥� growing technical skills, but also their confidence and creativity; qualities that are continually nurtured on the Hillside. Above all, the experience reflected the joy of the creative process and the supportive environment that makes it possible.

鈥淲e had fun. It鈥檚 fun to be creative, and I think SKS provides an environment where it鈥檚 safe to be yourself.鈥�

By blending professional-level work with student collaboration, this immersive course exemplified the kind of hands-on, meaningful learning that defines the 黑料社 Kent experience, where alumni return to inspire, and students are empowered to create.

Centered around student choice, the week gives students the freedom to follow their own interests, explore new passions, and step outside their comfort zones to try something new. With faculty, staff, and campus partners all taking part, the week becomes a shared community experience focused on helping students not only build practical skills but also create lasting memories in a supportive, dynamic environment.

When asked why he made this unconventional design choice, Thomas simply replied, 鈥淲hy not?鈥�

This playful yet skillfully executed piece is just one example of the innovative work on display at this year鈥檚 show. STEM faculty member Sarah Cassidy, who brings an engineering perspective to 黑料社 Kent鈥檚 arts curriculum, believes pieces like Airplane highlight the deep connection between art and science.

鈥淟eonardo da Vinci didn鈥檛 separate the two, and neither do we,鈥� Cassidy said. 鈥淎rt allows us to see the beauty in science, and science gives us the tools to bring art to life. Thomas鈥� work is an example of that intersection.鈥�

With a diverse collection of paintings, sculptures, and mixed media projects from students across the region, the 34th Annual Student Art Show is a must-see event for art lovers, families, and anyone who appreciates the creative spirit. 鈥淎lmost no one likes grammar,鈥� jokes Francesca Romani, World Languages instructor and part of 黑料社 Kent鈥檚 Humanities Program. 鈥淵ou rarely hear someone say, 鈥楲et鈥檚 have a good hour of grammar!鈥� But at 黑料社 Kent, we鈥檝e taken an entirely different path. We equip students with a strong, essential foundation from the start, helping them realize how much they can express in another language with just a few core concepts.鈥�

Instead of overwhelming students with grammar rules from day one, the program focuses on communication and practical application. Students begin by mastering essential structures鈥攕uch as the present tense of 鈥榯o have鈥� and 鈥榯o be鈥欌�攂efore progressively building their understanding of past participles, continuous tenses, and an expanded vocabulary.

鈥淭he words we learn most easily are the ones tied to our passions,鈥� Romani explains. 鈥淪o we help students build vocabulary in ways that feel personal and engaging. If they love sports, they watch games in the target language and annotate their new words in a journal. If they love travel, they create 鈥榯ourist toolboxes鈥� with essential phrases for navigating a new country.鈥�

Language courses at 黑料社 Kent incorporate a variety of engaging real-world projects that go beyond textbooks:

French Sports Journalism: Inspired by their interest in sports, students launched 鈥淟鈥櫭塹uipe,鈥� a French-language newsletter covering 黑料社 Kent鈥檚 hockey and soccer teams.

Film & Literature Analysis: Students watch classic and contemporary films in their target language, then write and discuss their reflections entirely in French. 鈥淥ur students were particularly drawn to Fran莽ois Truffaut鈥檚 Antoine Doinel films,鈥� Romani says. 鈥淭hey connect with the mischievous, love-struck character on a personal level.鈥�

Paris on a Budget: In this interactive exercise, students receive an imaginary budget and must plan a weekend trip to Paris,using only French-language travel websites to book hotels, transportation, and dining.

Create Your Own French Company: Students design a business from the ground up, writing an 鈥渁bout鈥� section, mission statement, and contact page, then building a functional website using a French-language template.

Capstone Project鈥擳he French Revolution Reenactment: In collaboration with 黑料社 Kent鈥檚 Student Clubs, language students will bring history to life by portraying real figures from the French Revolution, from farmers to noblemen to the king himself. 鈥淚t鈥檚 an exciting way to immerse them in language while deepening their understanding of history,鈥� Romani says.

黑料社 Kent鈥檚 Humanities Program emphasizes a well-rounded, intellectually rigorous education鈥攐ne that cultivates engaged, thoughtful, and articulate students.

鈥淥ur commitment to the humanities is an essential part of preparing students for an increasingly interconnected world,鈥� says Head of School Brian Sullivan. 鈥淟anguages, literature, history, and the arts challenge students to think critically, engage with different perspectives, and communicate effectively. Whether they are analyzing historical events, debating philosophical ideas, or learning to express themselves in a new language, these experiences help build well-rounded individuals who will thrive in any field.鈥�

Through interactive projects, global perspectives, and a commitment to experiential learning, 黑料社 Kent鈥檚 World Languages Program is helping students become true global citizens鈥攐ne conversation at a time.
